Freshman lawmaker Leroy Garcia is bucking his caucus when it comes to gun control.
The Pueblo Democrat said he’s supporting only one of the four gun bills Democrats have introduced so far, the bill requiring universal background checks. All four are scheduled to be heard today on the House floor.
Garcia said in the last three days his office has logged more than 3,000 e-mails and 400 phone calls and 68 percent of them are opposed to gun control.
A look at the four bills: House Bill 1229 requires background checks for all gun transactions; House Bill 1226 involves concealed carry permits on campuses; House Bill 1228 institutes a fee for gun buyers to cover the cost of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to perform background checks; and House Bill 1224 limits magazines to 15 rounds.
