The young people have a variety of stories — dealing with the death of a loved one, surviving homelessness, getting away from gangs and being a refugee.

One student was hit by a bicycle, an incident that helped turn his life around. Another student lost 100 pounds over four years and will be among the 30 kids aged 13 to 19 who will be receiving the award for the 2012-13 school year.

Hancock will join with Lindsay Neil, director of the Office of Children’s Affairs, to hand out the honors at the ceremony that begins at 6 p.m. in The Denver Post Building Auditorium, 101 W. Colfax Ave.

The Mayor’s Youth Awards began 25 years ago and is meant to honor youth who have showing fortitude, made positive choices and turned their lives around.
