The biggest champion of decriminalizing pot in the U.S. House of Representatives told participants in a social media town hall he doesn’t smoke it.
WASHINGTON — Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, is among the biggest champions of the blossoming marijuana industry in Colorado, leading on legislation to decriminalize it at a federal level and pushing the Justice Department to not enforce federal drug laws in jurisdictions where marijuana is legal.
But the 37-year-old congressman said in a written social media townhall that he didn’t partake in the stuff..
“I like reality too much,” he said.
Polis also wrote to participants that he was “shocked” Drug Enforcement Agency Administrator Michelle Leonhart still had her job.
“Golden Spike” asked:
“Mr. Polis, please describe your frustration with the confounding display of ignorance put forth by Michele Leonhart during the policy hearings, and if you could possibly give some advice to the average citizen for combating this sort of iron clad ignorance pertaining to the new drug issues.”
Polis said he was disappointed that she compared marijuana to all other illegal drugs in a recent hearing.
“Yeah that was hugely disappointing and I am kind of shocked she is still in her job. To have that level of ignorance (or willful misleading us) does not exactly inspire confidence in our top drug enforcement officer,” Polis wrote back.
